Baltimore got its name from Cecil Calvert, who was the second Lord Baltimore and the first governor of the Province of Maryland. The Port of Baltimore was established in 1706, and the town was founded in 1729. In 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner" when he saw the American flag flying from Fort McHenry after the Battle of Baltimore. Already an economically significant town, Baltimore gained even more prominence after the completion of the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) railroad in the 1830s.
Today, more than 620,000 people live in Baltimore and roughly 2.7 million people live in the greater metropolitan area. Every year, millions of visitors flock to Baltimore's National Aquarium, which is just one of many attractions around the Inner Harbor. Baltimore is home to Johns Hopkins University, one of the most respected medical institutions in the world.
